Friday, March 2nd I made my first official appearance as Miss Teen Barrie-World 2012 at my elementary school – St. Monica’s Elementary School, Barrie. I read to students in grades 1 & 2; they were full of energy, smiles and a little mischief.
I was greeted with hugs and asked if I was a princess; they certainly made me feel like one. All the girls tried on my crown and posed for the camera, and even one boy tried on the crown too!
I spoke to a group of grade 7 and 8 girls who were forthcoming and open about their experiences with bullying. Their stories were both heartbreaking and liberating. Our conversations became lively and fun talking about pets, hobbies and all things relevant when you’re 13. I even taught the girls the proper way to stand for the pageant.
I was able to meet with many of my former teachers and the staff; they were all supportive and surprised as I was quite a Tom Boy when I was younger. It was a wonderful experience visiting my elementary school, the sights, sounds and even the smells brought back wonderful, loving memories. I was very fortunate to have attended such a good school.
